The new sorento also has 15-percent greater cargo volume than its predecessor. One walk around this stylish new sorento makes clear that it means to compete toe to toe with the premier midsize crossovers, chevrolet equinox, toyota highlander, ford edge, and honda pilot. the exterior styling of the kia sorento is crisp, freshly contemporary. It delivers adequate performance and adequate fuel economy, achieving an epa-estimated 21/27 mpg city/highway for sorento 4wd with 6-speed automatic. Its interior uses quality materials throughout. It has a forward-lunging stance, the result of a low and compact nose, followed by long, dynamically rising lines to rearward. And kia has been particularly successful at executing the current high-grille look (dictated by body-integral front bumpers) without causing the nose to seem high and awkward. the grille is flanked on both sides by sly-looking upper complexes for headlights and turn signals. Lower complexes contain foglights and are finished in matte-black to match the grille mesh. to maximize interior volume, particularly in the third-row seats, the sorento roofline makes only a slight taper downwards at the rear. Similarly, the rear passenger doors extend back over the wheel housing to optimize access to third-row seats. the sorento's shape is more than just a pretty face; it slips through the air at highway speed with minimal wind noise. And sure enough, there is gray simulated-wood trim, not the real thing, in the driver's compartment. But to deliver good value, kia goes for simple but handsome fixtures. The controls and switchgear are of high quality, with good tactile feel. This lacked some of the more sophisticated onscreen visual aids for backing while turning, as found on some premium crossovers. Similar units in some other vehicles light automatically upon being opened. we found the driver's seat, with eight-way power adjustment and lumbar support, to be excellent, firm, supportive, confidence-inspiring. The right front seat, however, is adjusted manually. the second-row bench seat was comfortable, though even with the front seat well forward, second-row legroom was so-so. But then, this is not a large suv and kia has achieved no spatial miracles. On the other hand, the company says a 6-foot, 7-inch nba player can drive the sorento in full comfort. the third-row seats are a bit of a compromise, as they are in any but the most grandiose three-row vehicles. Tilt-folding the second-row seats forward to access the rear involves a bit of calisthenics, as the seats are fairly heavy. Once the unlucky, last-row galley slaves are in place and the second-row seats slam down and lock, the latches are hard to release and fold forward from the rear row. Headroom in the far rear is minimal, as well. The climate control worked flawlessly, offering strong volume when requested. And the rear roof-mounted dvd screen, which pops down behind the two front bucket seats, should provide plenty of amusement for those with nothing to do. Finally, with all seats folded down, maximum cargo volume is 72. 5 cubic feet, a massive improvement over the previous model. driving impressionwe're used to kias being small, cheap and cheerful, and this suv is certainly cheerful, in a roomy, upscale way. The new unibody construction isolates engine vibration well. Moving away from the curb onto choppy pavement, the structure again proves its worth, having excellent sound damping and an impressive feeling of sturdiness. the macpherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are nicely tuned to muffle and damp pavement irregularities the vehicle is passing over. On smooth curves when driving a bit more aggressively, this crossover feels decently agile and easy to control. Much of this is thanks to kia's firm, spot-on steering effort. Steering is power-assisted but requires the driver to make forthright moves to left or right, there's no light-headed wandering or numbness of any kind. This no-nonsense steering feel will prove invaluable when making an emergency accident-avoidance mane.

The mechanical design of the soul is similar to that of a small sedan. All models are front-wheel drive; no all-wheel drive is offered. 2013 kia soul models are distinguished from last year's models by new color and trim choices and some minor content changes. The kia soul debuted as a 2010 model. 2012 models brought new engines and freshened styling. two engines are offered. It's available with the 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, but this time the manual enjoys a slight fuel economy advantage, at 24/29 mpg vs. 23/28 mpg for the automatic. The upgrade 2. 0-liter engine delivers a bit more power, however, particularly important for the automatic, costs just slightly more and nearly matches the smaller engine in fuel economy. overall, we found the soul felt nimble and light, fun to drive. It rides like the other economy cars in its class. How many car makers can offer that?. lineupthe 2013 kia soul comes in three models: soul, soul+ (pronounced soul plus), and soul! (soul exclaim). kia soul 14,400) comes standard with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, black exterior trim, am/fm/siriusxm/cd/mp3 stereo, usb and auxiliary inputs, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with bluetooth and audio controls, 60/40 split folding rear seat, variable intermittent wipers, 15-inch alloy wheels. The primary option is a premium package 2,500) with navigation, rear camera, siriusxm traffic, leather seat trim, heated front seats, climate control, and push-button start/smart key. safety equipment on all models includes six airbags, active front headrests, latch seating system, electronic stability control, antilock brakes, and the mandated tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe kia soul looks like it's wearing a pair of wraparound sunglasses. Because the rear windows are narrower than the front windows, there appears to be a downward rearward slope to the roof, but it's an illusion achieved by the rising beltline below the windows. There's a final and small third side window, an upside-down wedge to complete the shape. bold chiseled wheel arches give the soul strength. The corners are nicely rounded, erasing the hard corners of a box. The grille is small and tidy, the soul's mouth no bigger than needed to suck in air for the engine, and the lower bumper/air opening look is called tusk in-house. The front lighting elements are contemporary and stylish, even more so on the soul! Model that includes led running lamps and projector headlamps. a black horizontal ding strip on the doors doesn't do much for cleanliness, but adds to the strong straight-line styling and it serves a function. The 16- and 18-inch alloy wheels are larger than often available in this size and class of car. big vertical taillamps climb the rear pillars and project a feeling of safety. The wraparound configuration that appeared with the 2012 models makes it easy to draw a relation between the lights and the ears of a hamster like those in soul commercials. The liftgate and rear window are clean and smooth (and darkly cool when tinted), with an indented handle under a kia oval logo and a stylish chrome soul badge off to the side. All get the tusk bumper design, and the soul! It seems a little out of place when listening to talk radio, however. It's amusing in traffic jams. the front bucket seats are comfortable, good for long trips, and the interior vinyl and cloth trim is fine. There are bottle holders in the front door pockets plus cupholders in the console with its own deep compartment, a huge two-level glovebox, map nets on the front seatbacks, a trap-door compartment on the dash (that's molded so things don't slide around), and grab handles over every door. There are auxiliary audio, ipod, and usb port connections, and three 12-volt outlets on the soul+ and soul! the steering wheel is nice, with the usual standard controls the same colors as most cell phones. The three-ring instrument panel looks clean and uses an eave so the gauges are readable in the sun. The center stack is modest with business-like knobs and buttons. It accommodate the shifter and the optional uvo/microsoft entertainment system that includes a rear camera. Air conditioning proved very effective. the front seats offer plenty of room, including a full hand space over the head of six-plus-footers. The 60/40 rear seats drop flat in a heartbeat. There's an excellent compartment under the trunk floor, and below that a space-saver spare tire. Models with the 2. 0-liter engine and 6-speed automatics primarily. We haven't had a chance to test drive a base model with the 1. 6-liter engine, but given its ample 138 horsepower and six gears (with manual or automatic), few people should feel the need to step up to the soul+ or soul! For the more powerful 2. 0-liter engine. both engines feature direct fuel injection, for high-end power with good fuel economy while cruising. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 164 horsepower at 6500 rpm with a good 148 pound-feet of torque peaking at a fairly high 4800 rpm. This is more than adequate in a 2700-pound car. Indeed, the soul can keep up with traffic easily; many v8-powered full-size suvs are not demonstrably quicker. We found the clutch on earlier manual-transmission models to be smooth in operation, both from a standing start and while upshifting, and with six gears and ample torque we'd expect sprightly acceleration from even the 2013 base model.

The 2013 sportage sx gets a respectable 21/28 mpg epa city/highway rating with front-wheel drive and 20/25 mpg with awd. we found the standard 2. 4-liter engine delivers its power smoothly and mostly in a linear manner, with only an occasional, slight surge after an upshift in the automatic as the electronics adjust to the changing load. Those gear changes are clean, if not remarkably sharp, with ready downshifts for overtaking or merging. the steering feels heavier in the awd version but is reasonably responsive in both, with good directional stability. All-wheel drive comes with a limited locking feature for low-speed use in adverse conditions. the 2013 kia sportage is changed only slightly from last year. 2013 sportage models can be distinguished by revised kia badges. Power folding mirrors and sun visor extenders come on all 2013 sportage models. Led accent lights come on 2013 sportage lx and 2013 sportage ex models; the 2013 sportage sx gets led daytime running lights. The 2013 sportage ex is available with a new blue interior package. Sportage was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Some interior features were added for 2012. the styling looks fresh and sharp from every angle. Character lines are crisp but subdued, contrasting nicely with the overall rounded look. Blackened lower trim panels imply good ground clearance while keeping the tires visually in proper proportion to the body. we found the interior accommodations comfortable, though the sportage lacks the interior roominess of its competitors, the honda cr-v, toyota rav4, and subaru forester. The front seats offer good support. Leather-trimmed seats and an air-cooled driver's seat is available. An am/fm/cd/mp3 six-speaker stereo with siriusxm radio comes standard, with a subwoofer and external amplifier optional. An optional navigation system with a touch screen includes a rearview camera, an excellent safety feature. Sportage ex and sx get dual-zone, automatic climate control. cargo capacity is a generous 26. 1 cubic feet behind the second seat but a less-impressive 54. 6 cubic feet with the second seat folded. Sportage, lx and ex models come with the 2. 4-liter engine, while the 2. 0-liter turbo is exclusive to the sx. The optional rearview camera can help the driver notice small children behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundkia sportage styling is unconstrained by cliche or convention. From nose to tail, from footprint to luggage rack, sportage shares almost nothing outside of its overall proportions with more conventionally styled crossovers and mini-suvs. the upper grille is a bigger, bolder rendering of the kia-signature tiger nose. The sx sports its own, subtly different grille, which replaces the delicate horizontal-over-vertical mesh of lesser models with a more rugged chain-link texture; and the bright-chrome surround with chrome of a darker tone. the concaved hood flows smoothly back into the decently raked windshield. The high beltline reduces the real estate available for side windows, making for almost a chopped look, like street rods of the mid-20th century. A creased depression in the lower portion of the door panels breaks up the expanse of sheet metal, thereby lowering the impression of mass. The flat black trim from the front lower fascia continues around the sides, outlining the wheelwells, which the tires fill quite nicely, and underscoring the rocker panels. most of the styling lines on the backside pinch inward, toward, again, the trademark oval parked in the middle of the liftgate. The backlight is about the same proportion to the bodywork as the side windows, i. Taillights narrow as they look toward the centerline. Turn indicators are slotted into the rear bumper, an interesting location that at first blush appears to favor a closely following driver at the expense of one two or three cars back. A creased lip marks the bottom edge of the liftgate, above a license plate space that occupies the middle of the rear bumper where a continuation of the flat black trim panel completes its circumnavigation of the sportage's lower body. Dual exhausts with bold oval openings distinguish the sx. interiorthe kia sportage interior displays as much bold imagination as the exterior, while remaining ergonomically friendly and eye-pleasing. Nothing too fancy or gimmicky, just well crafted and eminently usable. essential instrumentation is easy-to-read analog, with a large, circular dial for the speedometer bracketed by a half-circle.
