It is a jutting, heavy-looking form that seems to take far more cabin space than it should, and its straight lines and hard angles have none of the fluidity and grace that enriches the rest of the new corolla. To be frank, it is old-fashioned and out of harmony. And it has premium equipment and attributes normally associated with suvs. Yet it's smaller and lower than an suv. And far more utilitarian than an ordinary passenger car. so what is it? the toyota venza is built on the camry platform, and made in the same plant in georgetown, kentucky. But it would be unfair to say the venza is just an upscale, contemporary rendition of a camry station wagon. The venza is more original than that, and more functional, loaded with a mix of highly evolved features and fresh design ideas. we might be tempted to call it a smaller, nimbler minivan, but it's a five-passenger vehicle, and emotionally, much hipper than any minivan we know. If it's a minivan, it's one dad won't be afraid to be seen in. And if it's a compact suv, the venza would be by far the quickest, slickest, hauler out there. truth is, it's really none of the above, but with attributes of all three. In simplest terms, the venza is an upscale car, with a roomy, cleverly designed interior, that can handle lots of the tasks suv owners might have become accustomed to. It's a family car, a good daily runabout that's easy to drive and park. And it's highly useful, for moving people, pets and grocery-getting. It is matched with a six-speed electronic transmission and, according to preliminary estimates, can deliver mileage as high as 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The optional engine for the 2009 venza is the 3. 5-liter v-6, which makes 268 hp at 6200 rpm, and 246 pound-feet of torque at 4700 rpm. on the road, the venza feels like a car. The combination of lamp types combined in the headlamps, and the use of fog lamps, create a crisp, technical feeling. in profile, the venza appears sleek and contemporary, thanks to low rocker panels and narrow doorsills, much more like a car than a suv. In keeping with the ft-sx concept vehicle that inspired the design, the wheels are placed out at the corners of the body, snugly positioned in the wheelwells, and there is minimal overhang on either end. The 20-inch wheels become especially prominent in the v6 versions, suggesting something surefooted in everyday driving, even sporty on a winding road. at the rear, s-shaped tail lamps contribute to the sporty feeling. The end result is to convey the impression of a smart, modern, and practical car. Most of all, the car conveys toyota's long-view dna, a way of saying that none of the venza's design elements are cliches likely to quickly become dated or out of style during the life of the car. interiorthe toyota venza is intended to be a refined, potentially luxurious alternative to a five-passenger sedan. And to offer more cargo and passenger space in the process. So the interior has been endowed with an unusual mix of qualities, selected to combine easy-to-drive attributes of a premium car with high-utility flexibility of an suv. keyless entry allowed us to just walk up to the venza and hop in; all five doors unlock at one touch. The venza is easy to get into, because the step-in height is quite low, same as a camry, but the higher roofline makes entry easier for taller people. Once in the seat, we pressed the start button and the instrument panel comes to life. While the gauges are brightly lit and highly visible, the car is very quiet at idle. seat quality is appropriate for a car that might convey a family and their pets on long-distance drives. The cushion length and seat back width are designed for comfort, and there is just enough side bolstering to allow for side-to-side support when the driving is more spirited. The seating position is a tad higher than the average car, more like a minivan, which affords easier visibility of the road ahead. It takes only a moment to adjust for legroom and seat angle, set the mirrors, and select drive. from the inside, the feeling is of spaciousness, especially in the front row. Both include a nicely textured dash; the cloth interior makes use of carbon-fiber accents for a high-tech appearance, while the leather interior has wood-grain accents to achieve a clean, modern take on classical materials. Both convey the look and feel of quality. The shift lever is canted slightly to the driver's side. There are two interior colors: ivory or light gray. the instrument cluster prioritizes an oversized speedometer, which is at the center of the cluster, with a slightly smaller tachometer to the left. Semi-circular fuel and temperature gauges are smaller and located to the right. The shift position indicator is a modest led display at center. The instruments look good, are bright enough even when the sun hits them directly, and pleasing at night. twisting stalks for lights, wipers and washers, and cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel. the center console is designed to be simple, clean, and uncluttered. It contains low-relief, soft-touch controls for the information center, the audio system and the hvac (heating/air conditioning) system. And it's built to toyota's high standard of quality, durability and reliability. the tundra is one of the smoothest, quietest, and most refined pickups we've driven. Its 4. 7-liter v8 engine is exceptional, with enough power to run with the big dogs. A properly equipped tundra can tow up to 7,100 pounds or haul up to 1,800 pounds. The heavy-looking chrome grille bars faintly suggest the 1947 gmc design, a model now popular with collectors. However, the tundra's styling is bland compared to the nissan titan, dodge ram, or the new ford f-150. The tundra shares a family resemblance with the compact toyota tacoma. Curving lines give both toyota trucks a sporty appearance, while bulging fenders make them look ready to go off road. The stepside body is more svelte than macho. the tundra double cab looks bigger and brawnier than the regular cab and access cab models. Around back, double cab models sport unique taillights. The short rear doors are hinged at the rear and open opposite the front doors. Fortunately, the inside of the rear door is padded, so this isn't a big problem. Handles for the rear doors are conveniently located on the outside, whereas most domestic pickups with extended cabs hide the handles inside the door jams. Still, the tundra's handle design isn't the most comfortable to use. regular cab beds measure 8 feet, but only 6-feet, 3-inches with the access cab. That's a few inches inches shorter than the short bed of a ford f-150 or chevrolet silverado. Toyota's bed is also a little shallower than ford's. The double cab's bed is about a half-inch shorter still, but at 20. 7 inches it's 3. 5 inches deeper than the beds of the regular cab and access cab. That makes it slightly deeper than the nissan titan crew cab or ford f-150 super crew beds as well. interiorthe tundra is a comfortable truck with a friendly interior. Toyota claims the tundra provides more front legroom than any of the domestic pickups, though it's only about a half inch, and the nissan titan has a slight edge over all of them. Double cabs come with bucket seats up front, rather than the split bench. Climbing in is easy, though the two-wheel-drive model seems to sit higher off the ground than other two-wheel-drive pickups. The tundra feels tall in the saddle, giving the driver a commanding view over shorter vehicles. accessory switches are concentrated in the center cluster for easy operation. The instruments are straightforward, with a big tachometer on all but base models. Double sun visors with extenders are useful at sunrise and sunset. access cab models add interior storage space and the ability to carry two more passengers. If those passengers are adults, however, the rear seat is mostly a short-term affair. The tundra does not have nearly as much space in the rear compartment of its extended cab as the other full-size pickups. And the rear seatback is vertical, forcing the occupants to sit bolt upright, uncomfortable for traveling any farther than the neighborhood restaurant. A far better use for the extended cab is carrying dry cleaning, groceries, briefcases, outdoor gear, or anything else that should be shielded from the elements. Unfortunately, the rear seat takes up a fair amount of room. The seat bottom on the split bench can be flipped up, but the seat doesn't fold completely out of the way nor can it be easily removed. Some of the domestic pickups are set up better for this. the double cab provides genuinely useful space for adult passengers. Its 37. 5 inches of rear-seat legroom makes for comfortable accommodations for back-seat passengers, though it doesn't have as much space as the new ford f-150 or nissan titan. Tundra's rear seatback reclines at an angle of 24 degrees, adding to comfort. Each rear seating position has a headrest and three-point safety belt. Rear-seat passengers also enjoy their own heating and air conditioning outlets, and optional audio and dvd entertainment systems. When the double cab's 60/40 split rear seat isn't occupied, it folds and tumbles to provide lockable, weather-tight storage space inside the cab. safety features for all tundra models include seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters, along with the required dual front airbags. This is the quietest pickup we've driven. There's very little wind or road noise in the cabin. And the ride quality is extremely smooth. the v8 engine provides excellent acceleration. It's very responsive in the 45-mph range, so passing on two-lane roads is easier. Toyota's v8 is silky smooth, quick, and extremely responsive. At the same time, it isn't overly sensitive to the throttle at tip-in, so it doesn't lurch off the line. And it sounds great. Toyota perfected this design in its land cruiser and lexus luxury vehicles. With distributorless ignition and other state-of-the-art features, the tundra's 4. 7-liter v8 produces nearly 200 pounds-feet of torque at just 2000 rpm and develops 315 pounds-feet at 3400 rpm. This gives it quick response around town and strong power for towing and hauling. It's also efficient, and qualifies as an ultra low-.
